FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter met with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday for the occasion of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ quarter-final between Chile and Brazil.

Bachelet presented the FIFA President with a medal specially struck by the Chile Football Association (FFC) to thank FIFA for its support following the earthquake which struck the South American country earlier this year.

On 27 February, Chile was hit by an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale, which has an as yet unrecorded maximum magnitude of ten. The epicentre of the quake was located close to the city of Concepcion in the centre of the country.

The FFC established a fund to help the areas most affected by the natural disaster. “Everyone can contribute to this fund, which has been set up to build a stadium with an artificial pitch, quality floodlighting and dressing rooms in Curico, Talca, Concepcion, Talcahuano and Constitucion, the five worst-affected towns,” the FFC President Harold Mayne-Nicholls told FIFA.com in March.

FIFA also responded quickly by sending an immediate assistance fund of $250,000 (USD), while supporting the FFC with its various projects aimed at rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by the earthquake. “I’m very touched by this medal,” said President Blatter. “It was a noble gesture to create this medal in order to thank us.”
