On the day that he turned 48, former Seleção striker Bebeto became the third member of the Management Board of the Local Organising Committee for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™. A hero of Brazil’s fourth world title triumph at USA 1994, Bebeto joins LOC President Ricardo Teixeira and Ronaldo on the Board.
“This is like scoring your first goal or getting called up to the Brazil team for the first time,” said the ex-player. “I’m going to give everything I’ve got to help stage the best FIFA World Cup of all time.”
In welcoming the strike legend, Teixeira had this to say: “Ronaldo and Bebeto did a lot for A Seleção on the pitch. Now they’re going to work together off it to ensure the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil is a success.”
“We’re going to do everything we can to make this one of the most wonderful assignments of our careers,” added former Brazil team-mate Ronaldo, who accompanied the new recruit on a tour of the LOC’s offices, situated in Barra da Tijuca, in the western part of Rio de Janeiro. “He’s a great addition to our team, which has now got a strike partnership.”
Paying a visit to the room occupied by the engineers and architects from the company Arena, which is operating a stadium-monitoring service at the LOC, Bebeto took great interest in the screens showing real-time pictures of the ongoing construction work at the venues. Chatting to Ronaldo about the progress of the various projects, he also quizzed the experts on the type of grass that will be used for the pitches.
Aside from helping to conquer the world in 1994, Bebeto also represented his country at Italy 1990 and France 1998, where Brazil finished runners-up and he partnered Ronaldo in attack.
Beginning his career at Vitoria-BA, Bebeto went on to become a hero figure at Flamengo, Vasco da Gama and Spanish club Deportivo La Coruna. Now a state deputy in Rio de Janeiro, the former goalgetter is a sitting member of the legislative assembly’s Special Committee Promoting the Legacy of the Sporting Events of 2014 and 2016.
