2010 FIFA World Cup™

Korea Republic stay top

Korea Republic beat Jordan 1-0 in an Asian FIFA 2010 World Cup™ qualifying match in the kingdom's capital Amman on Saturday. Striker Park Chu-young scored the goal with a penalty kick in the 24th minute at the King Abdullah Stadium.

Although the Jordanians started lively and dominated early in this Group 3 game, they failed to find the net thanks to the Korean defenders who moved fast enough.

OH Beom-Seok was hacked down by Jordanian goalkeeper Loai Hamaireh just inside the penalty area. The referee then gave a penalty kick to South Korea, and Chu-young successfully carried it out.

After the goal in the first half, Jordan pushed harder to reach the net seeking to equalise, but failed again.

Within Group 3, Korea Republic are now top on eight points, ahead of Korea DPR, who are in second place on goal difference, while Jordan remained in third place with four points and Turkmenistan in fourth with one point.

The South Koreans have beaten Turkmenistan 4-0 and drawn with Korea DPR 0-0 as well as with Jordan 2-2. In the next round Jordan will play Korea DPR in Pyongyang. South Korea will travel to Turkmenistan on June 14, before returning home to face the North on June 22.
