Having previously picked up a yellow card against Belgium in the second round of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, Paul Gascoigne's 99th-minute challenge on West Germany'sThomas Berthold resulted in the England midfielder's second booking of the tournament, meaning he would have missed the final had the Three Lions progressed.

With tears in his eyes, a visibly upset Gascoigne had to be comforted by striker Gary Lineker in one of the most endearing images in FIFA World Cup history.

Bobby Robson's England went on to lose the semi-final 4-3 on penalties in Turin as Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed from the spot, but Gascoigne returned home a national hero as 'Gazza-mania' gripped the nation.
