SEE YOU THURSDAY
What a way to end the Round of 16! Tuesday's two knockout stage games kept us on the edge of our seats and now that the quarter-finals are set the emotional rollercoaster looks to keep moving along. Argentina left it late to sink Switzerland in extra time, and in the finale Belgium edged USA in a thrilling 120 minutes of football that had everyone breathless in Salvador.

The blog is taking its own rest day tomorrow, but we'll be back on Thurdsay to preview the quarter-finals, which are set to take place on Friday and Saturday when France face Germany, Brazil battle Colombia, Argentina take on Belgium and Netherlands clash with Costa Rica.

So, catch your breath tomorrow and be ready to find the next gear as we move into the last-eight at what has been an absolutely outstanding FIFA World Cup. Thanks and following and we'll see you Thursday!

MARC WILMOTS
"Tonight we’ve seen a forward-thinking Belgium team. We had 27 shots on goal, the first came after the second minute and we didn’t stop attacking for the remaining 118 minutes. I want to congratulate Jurgen Klinsmann and the USA team, especially Tim Howard who had a fantastic game and I think we deserved to win. We played football, we were brave and we pushed ourselves to the limits. Sometimes in games like that when you have so many chances and you are denied, the result doesn’t go your way but we didn’t stop believing. Now we have four days to prepare for the Argentina game, which isn’t long. We’re not favourites but we want to win."

WHAT YOU'RE SAYING:
Our FIFA.com Club members have been talking over the game that's just finished, and here's what some of them said:

Ernst-jan

US played an incredible game. For their determined effort it would have been nice to see them win. I hope their team's fantastic performance inspires a much greater interest in the game at home, leading to more opportunity for players to grow and an even better US football team come 2018. They might be heading home but they can hold their heads high. To those who say the US shouldn't have come this far I can only say this: they did, and this is the World Cup. There are no pretenders.

JURGEN KLINSMANN
"It’s hard for us to end up on the losing side after 120 minutes of giving absolutely everything. But this game had everything, it was a thriller. We had chances to equalise, but congratulations to Belgium. I’m proud of the players not just for what they’ve done tonight, but what they’ve done throughout the tournament. They’ve made the country proud."

ON THIS DAY IN 2006
Portugal’s Ricardo was the first goalkeeper to save three shots in a FIFA World Cup penalty shoot-out, which happened during the quarter-finals against England. Portugal’s goalless draw against England after extra time in the quarter-finals ended Luis Felipe Scolari’s run of eleven consecutive FIFA World Cup match wins as coach (seven with Brazil in 2002 and four with Portugal in 2006).
