Quotes

“We tried to play our best football, but my players have had a long season and didn’t arrive at the World Cup in the greatest shape. The matches have been very tight, but we just haven’t been able to tilt them in our favour,” Reinaldo Rueda, Ecuador coach

Thanks for joining us from Rio de Janeiro, where France had a difficult time breaking down a stern Ecuador defence, including Man of the Match Alexander Dominguez in goal. La Tri failed to create any clear-cut opportunities of their own though, and they head home. There are just two more Round of 16 ties to be confirmed after France and Switzerland took their place in the knockout phases. France will face Nigeria in Brasilia on Monday before Argentina take on Switzerland in Sao Paulo on Tuesday. The final whistle sounds.

FULL TIME: France top the group with this point and, thanks to Switzerland's emphatic victory in Manaus, Ecuador head out to become the first South Americans to fail to progress to the knockout phase of Brazil 2014. France had a remarkable 20 shots at goal, but found Dominguez in decent form. Ecuador played most of the second half with ten men, after their captain Antonio Valencia saw red for a challenge on Lucas Digne, but in fairness, they created few clear-cut opportunities.
