The story and the origin of Queen Modjadji is one of intrigue and mystery. She resides in a world filled with 60 million year old cycads and was the inspiration for King Solomon's Mines.

Dzugundini, a princess in the old royal house of Monomotapa, migrated south from present-day Zimbabwe and settled in the area now known as Limpopo. People loyal to her from the Monomotapa kingdom followed her and she established and reigned over her own territory. Her people were known as the Balobedu people.

Chief Mugodo, the king of the Balobedu people, was told by his ancestral spirits that his sons were plotting to overthrow him. He decided that his daughter and her descendants should be the next ruler. Her second child, a daughter, became the heir to the Balobedu people. She became the first Modjadji, creating an unbroken female dynasty.

Modjadji literally means 'ruler of the day'. Ever since, the queen lives in complete seclusion and practice the ancient secretive art of rainmaking. The Rain Queen never communicates to commoners, instead she communicates to her people via her royal council. The last queen, Queen Makobo Constance Modjadji died in 2005. The royal council has not yet decided on the future of the Rain Queen and her people.

Shaka Zulu sent his most revered adviser Dumisa to ask the Rain Queen for blessings of rain on a drought-ridden Zulu Kingdom.
