With the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Preliminary Draw rapidly approaching, the inhabitants of Durban have been making the most of the beach.
Nothing beats the combination of sand and sea when you want to while away a few hours, and the residents of South Africa's second most populous city would certainly agree with that. The sun may have failed to put in its usual appearance today, but the Durban coastline offers far more in the way of entertainment than the traditional dip in the water followed by a nap on a towel.
Why not start the day with a surf at dawn, for example? Durban is one of the surfing capitals of the world, even boasting a museum dedicated to the sport, and every day hundreds of youngsters head out in search of the country's most dramatic waves.
After putting down your board, it could prove difficult to resist the allure of the Beach Pool. This water park offers every kind of attraction imaginable for people of all ages. But, be warned! The Beach Pool is understandably popular, and as soon as the doors open the toboggan rides begin to fill up with exuberant youngsters.
Football and entertainment for everyone
A little rest on the sand is probably a wise move after that, as the day is far from over. Indeed, you will soon be glad you recharged your batteries because Durban becomes the South African beach soccer capital after midday. From all over town, youngsters take to the sands to pursue their passion for the world's most spectacular sport.
Away from the ocean backdrop, footballs get kicked and chased in the street too, especially in the pedestrian zone of the Old Fort Road. Football is the favourite sport of millions of South Africans and, whatever neighbourhood you wander into, the game seems to be part of the local folklore.
If kicking a ball becomes tiring, Durban has plenty of other sporting alternatives to tempt you - such as cricket, the preferred pastime of the city's massive Indian community, or skating. Perhaps even a simple walk would do the trick, with the Jewel of India garden guaranteed to provide excellent scenery.
Finally, when you start to feel hungry, head back to the seafront, where a huge choice of gastronomic delights awaits you. Whether you prefer Indian restaurants, fast food or the city's famous grilled meats, you will find something to whet your appetite as you take in one last magnificent view of the sea.
