The Haitian islanders - then reigning champions of the Caribbean - nearly went out at the first hurdle. Meeting a revamped Netherlands Antilles over two legs, the Haitians could not produce a single goal and only the fortune of an Antillean own goal in the second leg saw them through on a decidedly unimpressive 1-0 aggregate scoreline.
Haiti - who made history for the region by qualifying for West Germany 1974 - were always going to be up against it in a complicated semi-final Group 3. And in the end, they picked up only three points from their six games, finishing in third place and seven points off runners-up El Salvador. The disappointing results put the Haitians out of the running for South Africa 2010 as they now turn their attentions to a more substantial run at Brazil 2014.
