The Cayman Islands put in a decent showing in the first round of qualifying for South Africa 2010, but in the end they were bested by a strong Bermudan outfit.
Having only joined FIFA in 1992, the progress the Caymans have made is nothing short of impressive for an islands chain of just over 40,000. Even so, after earning a well-deserved 1-1 draw in their first leg on the road in Hamilton, the Caymans then went on to drop the return meeting at home by a comprehensive 3-1 scoreline.
Losing out by 4-2 on the aggregate, the Caymans hunt for a place in South Africa is officially over. But as they eye a spot in Brazil in 2014, they can take heart in a much-improved squad and increased respectability in the region.
