Tiny Montserrat lost two-thirds of its population following the eruption of a massive volcano in the mid-nineties. With a team made up primarily of refugees based in England it was a victory for the island even to assemble a team for their one-off South Africa 2010 qualifier against Suriname.

In the end, the result was somewhat predictable with the Montserratians losing out 7-1 in late March of 2008. Vladimir Farrell scored the lone goal for Montserrat in the game, played in Trinidad.

The intrepid islanders now turn their attention to qualifying for Brazil 2014, and volcanoes, a rapidly dwindling population (currently under 5000) and increased hurricane activity are bound to plague the brave little side once again.
