Until 1991, Georgia was a republic of the Soviet Union, which took part in four FIFA World Cups™. After independence, Georgia formed its own national team and the Georgian federation joined FIFA in 1992.
Georgia's first appearance in a FIFA World Cup qualifying competition came in the run-up to the 1998 tournament in France. The Georgians found themselves in a group that contained England and Italy and finished second-bottom with only three wins. Four years later they achieved third place behind Italy and Romania.
In their quest to reach Germany 2006, Georgia had two wins and four draws to show from their 12 matches in the preliminary competition with 14 goals scored and 25 conceded. They finished sixth in a seven-team group which also included Ukraine and UEFA EURO 2004 winners Greece.
Georgia will now take the confidence gained from their victory over Scotland and draw with Ukraine in their ultimately fruitless attempt to qualify for UEFA EURO 2008 into their South Africa 2010 qualification campaign.
