A sturdy centre-back, Jay DeMerit has made a name for himself in England. Born in the frost-covered American north in Wisconsin, the powerful defender headed over to Europe on a wing and a prayer. He joined a semi-pro side before impressing and signing with Watford, where he played a season in the English Premier League (2007-2008).
With nearly 170 appearances at Watford, DeMerit has even worn the club's armband on occasion. The player's increased status overseas caught the eye of the powers that be in the US Soccer set-up in 2007, and he earned his first full cap, in March 2007, in a friendly against Guatemala. He then went on to take part in the victorious USA campaign at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup and put in a star turn in defence when the US reached the final of the 2009 Confederations Cup.
