Overlooked for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa, Moneeb Josephs might have felt hard-done after he enjoyed a sterling season with his club Orlando Pirates. In the past two years, the ever-energetic Josephs has been amongst the most consistent goalkeepers in the South African Premier Soccer League. Luck, however, has not been on his side, but how he will be relishing this moment.
In 2008, Josephs found himself as the first choice goalkeeper at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana after then number one, Rowen Fernandez suffered a last-minute injury. While he cannot be blamed for South Africa’s inauspicious tournament, he will look back at that tournament as an opportunity missed to cement his place in the team.
Often accused of being not able concentrate for the entire match, he has since polished his shortcomings and is ready to launch yet another bid to be the country’s number one. While Khune remains Parreira’s first choice goalie, Josephs will fancy giving the young Khune a run for his money.
