Suspended for a year after testing positive for doping, Sergio Mendoza made his return just in time to win a place in Reinaldo Rueda’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.
An utterly dependable right-back, Mendoza has enjoyed a lengthy career with the national side and has also turned out for some of Honduras’s biggest clubs.
He made his professional debut with Real Espana, his consistency and excellent positioning catching the eye of Olimpia, who signed him in 2006. Over the next three years Mendoza maintained his high standards and consolidated his place in the Honduras national side, becoming an undisputed first choice under Rueda.
Then came that suspension for doping, the result of his use of a lip cream containing a banned steroid. After serving his 12-month ban he resumed his career, having signed for Motagua in the meantime.
Thanks to the club’s confidence in his abilities, the full-back has regained his form and his place in the Catracho set-up and is out to prove himself on the biggest stage of all.
