Steve von Bergen made his Switzerland debut in September 2006 in a 2-0 friendly win over Costa Rica. The central defender has since won a further nine caps, including three qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010™.
Von Bergen, a stopper by trade, began his club career at FC Hauterive, where he came through the ranks of the youth academy. In the summer of 1996, he moved to Neuchatel Xamax where he spent nine years.
After a spell with Zurich where the 26-year-old won championship medals in 2006 and 2007, Lucien Favre - the Zurich coach at the time - took von Bergen with him when he took charge of Hertha Berlin. The centre back quickly became a mainstay of the Hertha side.
The run-up to South Africa 2010 could hardly have been worse for von Bergen however. He endured a tortuous season which ended with the ignominy of relegation for the proud Berliners. After such disappointment, the FIFA World Cup represents a perfect opportunity for him to showcase his talents to potential suitors.
