Johnny Leoni has been named as coach Ottmar Hitzfeld’s third-choice goalkeeper for the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010™ behind Diego Benaglio and his deputy Marco Wolfli.
The 6-foot 2-inch shot-stopper began his career in 1992 at the tender age of eight playing for his home town side FC Sion. In October 2003 he moved to FC Zurich where he has become a permanent fixture, winning his first silverware with the Swiss Cup in 2005 and three Super League titles (2006, 2007 and 2009).
Despite being included in the national squad on several occasions, Leoni has yet to appear in the red and white of Switzerland.
Having had to be content with watching four World Cup qualifiers from the bench, the 25-year-old will be hoping that his experience in this year’s UEFA Champions League will stand him in good stead should his services be required between the posts in South Africa.
