A midfielder with exquisite close control and fast feet who is capable of unlocking a defence with a turn or a short pass. Though on-field opportunities have been sporadic the 28-year-old has often been in and around the Socceroo set-up in recent years, and is an option to be deployed as a game-breaking substitute.
A dazzling performance at the 2001 FIFA U-20 World Cup helped earn a move to France with Troyes before Carle was coaxed back to Australia. Two stellar seasons with Newcastle Jets in the A-League concluded with Carle being named the Warren medallist as the league’s best player in 2007.
A season at Turkish club Genclerbirligi followed, prior to a short-lived stay at Bristol City, and then a move to Crystal Palace in 2008 where he has remained, generally enjoying regular first-team action.
After debuting for the Socceroos in February 2004 Carle was controversially omitted from the Athens Olympics squad, and then had to wait three years for his next taste of international football. Carle then secured selection in Australia’s 2007 AFC Asian Cup squad but opportunities under Pim Verbeek have been relatively limited for the Sydneysider of South American extraction.
