Easily the most surprising inclusion in Bert van Marwijk’s squad, the Twente veteran was not expected to be packing his bags for South Africa despite featuring in the Eredivisie’s second most miserly defence in 2009/10. Aged 39, goalkeeper Boschker has never been capped and has never previously travelled to an international tournament, having been left out of Marco van Basten’s initial long list for UEFA EURO 2008 following the Oranje’s friendly against Ukraine in May that year.
First choice for the newly crowned Dutch champions last term, the Lichtenvoorde native will be third in the Netherlands hierarchy behind Maarten Stekelenburg and Michel Vorm. Indeed, it was Stekelenburg who kept him on the sidelines during his only year away from Twente, at Ajax in 2003/04. He failed to make a single appearance for the capital outfit as they clinched the league title, while he returned to familiar surroundings in the summer of 2004. Overall, Boschker has contested more than 500 championship matches for Twente since making his debut in 1989 – when the Netherlands were champions of Europe.
