The FIFA World Cup™ Trophy touched down in the Zambian capital of Lusaka on Saturday 7 November as it made the 31st stop of its African tour, accompanied by representatives from FIFA and The Coca-Cola Company.
A light smattering of rain fell upon Lusaka International Airport as the delegation were met by the Minister of Youth, Sports and Child Development, Kenneth Chipungu, and the President of the Zambian Football Association, Kalusha Bwalya. A military band regaled those present with music, adding a little colour to the welcome ceremony.
4,000 fans expected
The following day, in front of an audience of politicians, business figures and local sporting officials, the Vice-President of the republic, George Kunda, unveiled the Trophy to widespread applause.
"The presence of the Trophy Tour in our capital will undoubtedly give football in this country a boost and the national side's next few matches will surely end in success," declared the Vice-President. "We will unfortunately be absent from South Africa next year, but we'll make it to Brazil in 2014."
Some 4,000 fans were expected to visit the Mulungushi Conference Centre to be photographed with the FIFA World Cup Trophy, presented by Coca-Cola. The joint FIFA/Coca-Cola delegation were then scheduled to leave Lusaka as the afternoon came to a close, with Bujumbura in Burundi their next destination and the 32nd leg of the Trophy Tour.
