After a goalless first half, it looked like being another miserable afternoon for the hosts when defender Geoffrey Gete was sent off on 50 minutes. But only seven minutes later, Francois Sakama opened the scoring for the Vanuatans against the run of play. Derek Malas made sure of the points in injury time, and a late goal from Maciu Dunadamu for the visitors made no difference to the result.
Vanuatu thus move up to four points, level with Fiji in third place on the table. Fiji travel to New Zealand, who have already progressed to a playoff with the fifth-placed Asian side, for the final Oceania qualifying game on 19 November.
