Peru coach Jose del Solar has admitted he is not sure how to pull his players out of their downward spiral, after their 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying campaign suffered another setback at the weekend.
The Peruvians were beaten 2-1 by Ecuador yesterday, their fifth successive defeat, to remain bottom of the South American standings.
Although qualification for South Africa 2010 is not yet a mathematical impossibility, Del Solar accepts they are unlikely to turn around their fortunes, and is already looking to his own future away from the post.
"This bad patch we are going through seems to be going on forever," he said. "Even though I know what is going to happen (Peru will be eliminated), I also know I will quit the national team frustrated.
"We know football gives you new opportunities, so I will take this as an experience I hope I can use with another club next year."
Del Solar is also prepared to shoulder the blame for Peru's failings, although he believes the problems lie far deeper. "I am guilty for this campaign, but not for 28 years of frustration in Peruvian football," he added.
