Atletico Madrid defender John Heitinga has been ruled out of the Netherlands' next two FIFA World Cup™ qualifiers, against Scotland and Macedonia, after suffering a head injury during a match against Real Mallorca.
The 25-year-old was "out of danger and in good general condition" and had left hospital where he had spent the night, the club said. The player received a blow to the head and lost consciousnes in a collision with Majorca player David Navarro during yesterday's match.
"The tests revealed that he suffered a crack in his frontal bone, specifically in the roof of his eye socket," and doctors have ordered him to rest for one week, it said. "Heitinga will be unable to join Holland for their next two matches," in which they face Scotland on Saturday and Macedonia on 1 April in Amsterdam, the club said.
The 25-year-old is "conscious, out of danger and in good general condition," said the club. It did not indicate how long he would be out of action. The Madrid club bought the Dutch international from Ajax Amsterdam last year for 10 million euros (13.6 million dollars).
Atletico is fifth in the Primera Liga, 26 points behind leaders Barcelona.
