Portugal-Brazil: Quotes

Dunga, Brazil coach
It was tough game. Portugal put a lot of people behind the ball because they only needed a draw to go through. We kept trying right till the end and we even had two or three chances. I can’t say I’m happy, though, because Brazil always plays attacking football and always try to win. We had a lot of possession today and we tried to keep hold of the ball to tire the opposition and keep things tight. I think we’ve played pretty consistently so far and we’ve got the results we needed to get. The team has kept its shape and overall I’m happy with them. Obviously we still need to keep on developing and improving because things are going to get tougher from now on.

Carlos Queiroz, Portugal coach
It was a good game and the attitude of the Portugal team was superb. I thought all the players went about their work brilliantly. We are in the second round and things are going to be different from now on. I have to say it was a tricky game for us and for Brazil too. We had to put our overalls on to begin with because Brazil started very strongly, but by the end we were wearing our dinner jackets. It was a great footballing spectacle and a draw was the right result in my view. No one knows what’s going to happen next and all we know for certain is that by finishing second we’re going to have four rest days instead of three.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal forward and Budweiser Man of the Match
It was a very difficult game against one of the best teams in the competition and it was a super match if you ask me. We’ll just have to wait and see who we get in the Round of 16 now, although it’s not really that important. We feel we have a chance and we are very confident going into the rest of the tournament.

Lucio, Brazil captain and defender
We knew we were in for a competitive match, with both sides trying to keep hold of the ball in the knowledge that a draw would take them through. We fought hard all the way and we can give ourselves a pat on the back. It wasn’t easy out there but everyone did their bit and tried as hard as they could. There were one or two tough tackles but both sets of players went for the ball and that’s what matters.

Eduardo, Portugal goalkeeper
We’ve only conceded three goals in our last 19 games and that’s a record that means a lot to me and the team. We defend as a unit and we work hard for each other. We’re very happy right now because we’ve achieved our objectives. As for the rest of the tournament we know that every game is going to be difficult but we’ve already seen some big teams go out and we’ll be taking each match as it comes. At least we’ve achieved our first objective.

Julio Cesar, Brazil goalkeeper
Portugal stayed back yet again and tried to hit us on the counter with Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao. It was vital for us to finish first in a really tough group and now we have to face the knockout rounds, where we can’t afford to lose. I feel great and the protection I’m using for my back is only a precaution. We need to keep applying ourselves, but the team is full of confidence and we’re ready to take on anyone.
