Raymond Domenech, France coach
We’re sad and disappointed, even if I saw what I wanted to see in this match: selflessness, heart and solidarity. When things aren’t going well for you, they really don’t go well. We tried to muster some energy. This team has real potential. I wish my successor and the France team good luck. I’ve enjoyed being coach and I cared deeply about this France team. This isn’t the end because the France team never dies. The players still want to achieve something and I wish good luck to those who will come into the side in the future.
Carlos Alberto Parreira, South Africa coach
We had chances. I’m very proud of the players and the way in which they played right from the start and for the whole 90 minutes. We didn’t fall too far short of qualifying. Even though I think at 2-0 we should have killed the game off by scoring a third goal, I’m happy to have seen my players make progress. They’ve made the whole country proud. The foundations are there and I’m very confident about the future of South African football.
Florent Malouda, France midfielder
It’s a shame, but given what happened before the match it would have been a miracle to win. We didn’t have the right attitude to get beyond the group stage. I would like to apologise on behalf of all the players. We’ll be discussing things among ourselves. There’s a lot of tension in the squad, which isn’t ideal for preparing an important game. We lost our chance to qualify long before today. It’s been difficult within the squad. We’re not proud of what we’ve done. I don’t know what we’ll have to do to earn forgiveness.
Djibril Cisse, France striker
I’m disappointed. This wasn’t an inevitable ending as we had chances at the start of the match. We could have pulled something off if we’d taken them, but we weren’t able to put them away. The South Africans converted theirs, on the other hand.
Katlego Mphela, South Africa forward and Budweiser Man of the Match
It’s true that we could have done even better, but we missed a fair amount of clear opportunities. We also played some good football, though. We can be proud of ourselves. A win is still a win, especially against France at a World Cup.
Bongani Khumalo, South Africa defender
We really wanted to win this match, so scoring our first goal very early on helped us a lot. Nevertheless, I’m not surprised that we ended up conceding a goal. France have plenty of quality and move forward at pace. We’re very disappointed, but I’m pleased with our performance today.
