FIFA to review dramatic World Cup final
The 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany culminated in a dramatic final, with incidents towards the end of the match that FIFA wishes to clarify as follows:
Sending off of Zinedine Zidane (FRA)
Referee Horacio Elizondo (ARG) sent off French player Zinedine Zidane for an act of violence against Marco Materazzi (ITA) in the 110th minute. The incident was directly observed (i.e., without the use of a monitor) by fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo (ESP) from his position at the pitchside, who informed the referee and his assistants through the communications system.
FIFA will open a disciplinary investigation into Zidane's conduct to enable it to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident as exactly as possible.
Zidane awarded Golden Ball for best player
More than 700 journalists have voted Zinedine Zidane the best player of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany. In a process conducted without FIFA's involvement, the votes were cast into ballot boxes in the Media Centre in Berlin that remained open until midnight on the day of the final. It is impossible to determine how many journalists cast their votes before the match and how many during it, as the ballot papers were not counted until after the deadline for voting had expired.
2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter has stressed once again that "Media reports that the 2010 World Cup will be held in a different country are completely groundless. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will take place in South Africa." The official logo of the 2010 World Cup was unveiled in Berlin on 7 July in the presence of the President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki. Now that the 2006 World Cup has ended, FIFA will concentrate its efforts on preparations for the first World Cup on African soil, in accordance with its existing plans.
