Australia coach Pim Verbeek has said he will select an all A-League squad for this month's AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia in Jakarta.
The Dutchman said he would announce his squad on Monday for Australia's opening 2011 Asian Cup qualifier on 28 January and save his European-based stars for the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Japan in Yokohama on 11 February. Verbeek said logistics and a wish to avoid conflict with clubs would prevent him seeking European-based players for the Indonesia match.
However, he said he was keen to give the A-League's best a chance to perform at international level. "The A-League players deserve it - I just want to see them in a big international game," Verbeek said. "Playing in front of a 90,000-strong hostile crowd is very different to playing domestically."
Verbeek said current form would be his priority when selecting players for the Jakarta match. "It's not about what they've done in the past. It's about what they're doing at the moment," he said. "I have been here for the past year so I know what they can do."
