A hamstring injury will sideline Perth Glory's Brazilian star Amaral for the remainder of the season, according to coach Dave Mitchell. The former Brazil international, 35, who signed for Glory in July, has not played since he sustained the injury early last month and the team had hoped it would heal with rest.
But he aggravated the problem two weeks ago at training, and a scan revealed a torn right hamstring tendon. The midfielder will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair the injury.
Mitchell said Amaral's absence for the rest of the season, which ends in February, was disappointing. He did not comment on whether Glory would renew his one-year contract for next season. "He's going to have an operation on it, and if that's successful and he comes through we'll just have to wait and see... we'll have to leave that until a later date," Mitchell said.
Amaral will be sidelined for three months by the surgery, but he is expected to stay in Perth for his rehabilitation. Glory are second from bottom in the eight-team league.
