New Zealand international striker Shane Smeltz will quit struggling Wellington Phoenix to sign a three-year deal with new Australian A-League club Gold Coast United, his club announced on Tuesday.

Phoenix confirmed that Smeltz, 27, had decided not to extend his current contract and will join Gold Coast, who come into an expanded A-League next year.

Smeltz, who played in England for AFC Wimbledon and was New Zealand's player of the year in 2007, will play out the rest of the season with Phoenix before heading to the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast United head coach Miron Bleiberg said Smeltz's signing was the club's most significant coup so far, although he said contract details were still to be decided.

Smeltz is equal second top-scorer in the A-League with six goals from ten games for the last-placed Phoenix.
