Germany defender Per Mertesacker has been given a three-match ban by the German Football Federation (DFB) disciplinary committee after being shown a straight red card last weekend.

The 24-year-old Werder Bremen centre-back was dismissed for bringing down Hoffenheim striker Vedad Ibisevi,c who was clear on goal early in the second-half of last week's Bundesliga match.

Bremen won the game 5-4 and Mertesacker admitted he sacrificed himself for the good of the team. His club have appealed the decision, but the German international expects to miss future Bundesliga games against Stuttgart, Dortmund and Hanover.

"The victory demanded victims - unfortunately it was me," said Mertesacker.

Mertesacker has 49 caps for Germany and will use the time to catch up on his fitness having just recovered from flu and a knee operation. "The fitness is still missing, otherwise I would look at this situation through different eyes," he said.
