Kaizer Chiefs pipped Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 on penalties to win the South Africa Top 8 Cup after a goalless final on Tuesday.
Reneilwe Letsholonyane converted the last kick of the shoot-out after Chiefs had missed once and Sundowns twice in a tense climax to a disappointing match watched by a near-capacity 45,000 crowd.
"It was a game of missed opportunities by each side, which often happens in a final with so much at stake. Both teams were afraid to lose," confessed Turkey-born Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral.
Sundowns midfielder Surprise Moriri was the worst culprit in a final that will be remembered most for amazing misses, failing to tap the ball over the line from close range four minutes before the end of normal time.
Mandla Masango squandered Chiefs' best chance with one minute of extra time remaining, choosing to shoot when Venezuelan Jose Torrealba was unmarked in front of an opengoal.
The season-opening Top 8 Cup featured the clubs that occupied first to eighth place in the 2007/08 league standings.
