DC United claim US Open Cup

Brazilian strikers Fred and Luciano Emilio scored to give DC United a 2-1 victory over second-division Charleston Battery on Wednesday in the US Open Cup championship game.

The Major League Soccer side had not captured the trophy in the all-comers USA tournament since 1996, when United dispatched another lower-level club, the Rochester Rhinos, to complete a USA double after winning the MLS title.

Emilio put United on the scoreboard in the fourth minute, but Ian Fuller equalized for the South Carolina side from the United Soccer League in the 10th minute. The game was deadlocked at half-time, but Fred found the net after five minutes of the second half and United kept their edge to the finish, securing a berth in next year's CONCACAF Champions League.
