Stoke City have re-signed Danny Higginbotham from Sunderland for an undisclosed fee, the buying club announced.
Higginbotham agreed a three-year deal with Tony Pulis's side after the Premiership clubs had negotiated the transfer over the weekend.
"Stoke City are delighted to announce that Danny Higginbotham has today rejoined the club from Premier League rivals Sunderland," a statement on City's website confirmed.
The 29-year-old moved to Sunderland from Stoke for £3 million 12 months ago but was unable to hold down a regular place in Roy Keane's side.
Stoke chief Executive Tony Scholes said: "Danny is a player we know very well and we are very happy to have him back here. His character and leadership qualities are both absolutely first class and we know exactly what we are getting from him."
