Sunderland manager Roy Keane today signed teenage Irish midfielder David Meyler from Cork City for an undisclosed fee.
Meyler agreed a three-year contract and could make his debut for the Wearsiders against Cobh Ramblers in a friendly on Monday.
The 19-year-old, who follows former Cork team-mate Roy O'Donovan in making the move to the Stadium of Light, said: "I'm here to succeed.
"My ambition is to break into the first team as soon as I can. I want to do it here, and hopefully I can."
Meyler, believed to have cost around £160,000, can not wait to prove himself to Keane, who is like Meyler, a native of Cork, south-west Republic of Ireland.
"Roy Keane is a legend where I come from," he said. "Everyone grew up watching him play and that included me."
