Atletico Madrid today signed French international goalkeeper Gregory Coupet from Ligue 1 champions Lyon for 1.5 million euros. The 35-year-old had been set to sign for the Spanish heavyweights last week following talks, but the move hit a hitch over the fee.
Coupet had a clause in his Lyon contract, one which was set to run until 2010, that allowed him to leave Lyon for three million euros. However, Atletico finally got the keeper, who won seven straight league titles with Les Gones, for less.
Atletico will pay an extra 500,000 euros if Coupet helps them qualify for the UEFA Champions League in the next two seasons. They will participate in the final qualifying round for the competition in the 2008/09 season.
