Israel forward Ben Sahar has confirmed he has joined Portsmouth on a six-month loan from Chelsea. The highly-rated 18-year-old spent time at Championship sides Queens Park Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday last season and is relishing the prospect of getting top-flight experience with Pompey, whose FA Cup triumph in May has also qualified them for the UEFA Cup.

"I'm ready for the challenge of being part of such a big club like Portsmouth," he said. "I want to be part of it and to show that I deserve to be here. We have seen Portsmouth are a great team who can win trophies. They are now in Europe and that will be a big challenge as well."

Sahar joined Chelsea in May 2006 from Hapoel Tel Aviv and has made three first-team appearances for the London club. He faces competition from Jermain Defoe, David Nugent and Kanu for places up front in Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth team.
