Skrtel voted Slovakia's top player

Liverpool's young defender Martin Skrtel was voted Slovakia's player of the year on Sunday.

The 23-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg in January, was awarded 323 points out of a possible 340 from managers and journalists who voted, the Sita agency reported.

"I am really happy, it is not often that a defender wins this poll," said Skrtel whose four-and-a-half Liverpool deal is believed to have cost the Anfield side £6.5 million, a club record for a defender.
