Urawa's Hasebe off to Wolfsburg

Japanese midfielder Makoto Hasebe said on Tuesday that he was set for a move to German First Division side VfL Wolfsburg from Asian champions Urawa Reds.

"I chose Germany considering the potential for progress in my abilities," Hasebe, 23, told reporters. "When I play, I want to feel like I'm representing Japan and Urawa," he said.

Hasebe, an international, said he expected to leave for Germany on Wednesday and complete a medical checkup before signing the next day.

He joined Urawa in 2002 and contributed to the team's J-League championship in 2006 and last year's Asian AFC Champions League title. He scored 12 goals in 149 J-League games.

His departure to the Bundesliga comes just days after his compatriot Naohiro Takahara, 28, left Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt for Urawa. The star said he was disappointed at being limited to just eight games in the past season in Germany.
