Schneider back in training

Germany's vice-captain Bernd Schneider is set for a return to training with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen this weekend after recovering from the knee strain he picked up last September.

Schneider, 33, has only just returned to running and is one of Germany's first-choice midfield stars, including Michael Ballack and Torsten Frings, missing from Saturday's UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier clash with Cyprus in Hanover.

The midfielder picked up a knee injury in his side's UEFA Cup clash against Uniao de Leiria on 20 September and will resume training with Bayer's squad on Sunday.

But he will be struggling to prove his fitness to Bayer coach Michael Skibbe for his side's next Bundesliga clash with Duisburg on 24 November.
