Who is the best African player?

This week, have your say on who is currently the best African footballer. There is no shortage of contenders, but who do you feel is the pick of the bunch?

FIFA.com has decided to give fans even more of a say. Every week, the official FIFA website will throw a couple of subjects out for discussion; topics that supporters are talking about. Then it is up to you to get the debate going. Footballing principles apply of course: play fair and keep it clean and sensible.

There was a time when the likes of Roger Milla, Rabah Madjer, Abedi Pele and George Weah were one-offs, rare African pearls who sparkled in some of the world's most prestigious championships. This is no longer the case.

The world's second-most populous continent is now responsible for producing a selection of the sport's finest talents. The question is: assuming these players were all fit, who is the best?

Strikers have a conspicuous presence on the list. Ivorian Didier Drogba of Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers' South African goal-getter Benni McCarthy finished as the top two scorers in the 2006/07 English Premier League, while Portsmouth's Zimbabwean Benjamin, Togolese luminary Emmanuel Adebayor of Arsenal and Obafemi Martins, who stars for Newcastle United and Nigeria, have all illuminated the same championship this season.

Over in the 2006/07 Spanish La Liga, Sevilla's Fredi Kanoute of Mali finished short of just two rivals in the race to succeed Samuel Eto'o, Barcelona's Cameroonian luminary, as the Pichichi recipient.

Perhaps you rate a midfielder as the continent's finest performer. Chelsea's multi-functional Ghanaian Michael Essien and his international team-mate Stephen Appiah of Fenerbahce deserve consideration, as does Mahamadou Diarra of Real Madrid and Mali and Egypt playmaker Mohamed Aboutrika, who plays in his homeland for Al Ahly.

Or can Senegal's versatile El Hadji Diouf of Bolton Wanderers, Saint Etienne's Guinean ace Pascal Feindouno or one of Côte d'Ivoire's Toure bothers, Kolo of Arsenal or Yaya of Barcelona, lay claim to being Africa's best?

These, of course, are just a selection of the many names that are likely to be in the reckoning. The choice, as always, is yours...
