Ecuadorian giants Emelec booked a place in the Copa Sudamericana's second stage with a 2-1 home win over Colombia's Aguilas Doradas to claim a 3-2 aggregate victory on Wednesday.
A brace by Fernando Gimenez, who scored early in the first half and late in the second, gave the Guayaquil side victory despite Johan Fano pulling one back for Aguilas.
Paraguayan giants Cerro Porteno progressed despite a 1-0 home defeat to Rentistas of Uruguay. A 2-0 win in Montevideo last week was enough for Cerro Porteno, with Gustavo Alles' 11th-minute goal not enough to turn around the deficit.
Huachipato saw off San Jose 3-2 in Bolivia to complete a 6-3 aggregate win. Lucas Simon, Carlos Espinoza - with a penalty - and Leonardo Povea netted for the Chileans, while Cristian Diaz's brace was in vain for the hosts.
Catolica, meanwhile, booked a berth in the next round through penalties after a 1-1 draw away to Deportivo Anzoategui of Venezuela. Rolando Escobar netted for Anzoategui in the 34th minute but a penalty by Armando Wila took the tie to a shoot-out, which saw Catolica win 5-4.
Finally in Chile, visitors Universitario advanced despite a 1-0 defeat to Deportes Iquique. Universitario played the entire second half with 10 men after defender Ezequiel Filippetto's red card and Walter Mazzolatti netted in the 68th minute, but Universitario held on to qualify.
