Penarol put themselves in the driving seat for a place in the second round of the Copa Sudamericana with a 2-0 first-leg victory over Bolivian side Wilstermann.
The Uruguayan hosts took the lead after 12 minutes through Jorge Rodriguez, with Jonathan Rodriguez making sure of the win five minutes from time. The return leg of the first-round fixture will take place in Cochabamba next Thursday, although Penarol goalkeeper Pablo Migliore warned there is still work to be done for his team.
"When the tie is over, then we'll see whether or not this was a good result for us," he said. "We realised it was better to keep the ball to ourselves rather than hit long balls."
General Diaz enjoyed a 2-1 home win over Chilean club Cobresal, with Gustavo Toranzo opening the scoring for the Paraguayans with a 13th-minute header. Patricio Jerez equalised 14 minutes later, but Roberto Gamarra settled the first leg in the hosts' favour by providing the finish to a Blas Caceres assist.
In the Venezuelan capital Caracas, visitors Atletico Nacional claimed a 1-1 draw with La Guaira. Framber Villegas came off the bench to put the hosts ahead after 66 minutes, but Edwin Cardona levelled things from the penalty spot seven minutes from time.
Anderson da Silva's early free-kick gave Nacional Potosi a 1-0 first-leg win over Libertad, while UTC Cajamarca and Cali played out a goalless draw.
