Paraguayan giants Cerro Porteno kicked off their Copa Sudamericana campaign with a comfortable win at Uruguayan minnows Rentistas. A first-leg 2-0 victory was achieved when first, forward Oscar Romero thumped a volley into the net just before the half hour while playmaker Julio Dos Santos struck on the counter attack in injury-time.
"We take home a victory against an always difficult Uruguayan side. The team played an interesting and collective game, strong in our half," said Cerro defender Marcos Bonet. "The tie is not settled, we have to face the next encounter in Asuncion with the same attitude and humility."
Club Universitario of Bolivia saw off Deportes Iquique 2-0 at Olimpico Patria Stadium. Home midfielder Alejandro Bejarano fired Universitario ahead with a curling shot from outside the box midway through the first half, while there was no way back for the Chilean visitors on the night when Martin Palavicini headed home Diego Cabrera's long ball in the 75th minute.
Aguilas Doradas rescued a last-gasp 1-1 draw against Ecuadorian visitors Emelec. Just before half-time, Angel Mena put Emelec ahead with a header, but the Colombian side would claim a draw as forward Diego Alvarez headed home from a corner in injury-time.
Ecuador's Universidad Catolica drew 1-1 against Deportivo Anzoategui. Home forward Henry Patta Quintero opened the scoring in the 35th minute but the Venezuelans were not to be denied as Manuel Arteaga levelled matters just before the hour mark.
Finally, Chilean outfit Huachipato defeated 3-1 San Jose of Bolivia. Forward Andres Vilches' header put Huachipato ahead in the second minute, with Leandro Delgado extending the advantage with a superb shot from outside the box just after half-time.
Striker Mauro Bustamante pulled a goal back shortly afterwards from the penalty spot but Vilches restored the two-goal cushion after firing home from a loose ball.
