Senna ends 11-year stay at Villarreal

Former Spain midfielder Marcos Senna has ended his 11-year stay at Villarreal to continue his playing career in the USA.

"The Spanish-Brazilian, an authentic symbol of El Submarino Amarillo and a protagonist in the growth of the club, has accepted a new challenge both on a sporting and personal level and next season will play in the United States," said a statement on the club's official website.

Senna has represented Villarreal more than anyone else, with 363 appearances in all competitions, and was part of the side that reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2006 on their first-ever season in the competition.

The 36-year-old also played a crucial role in the first of Spain's recent major triumphs at international level as he started five of the six games in their UEFA EURO 2008 victory.

And there was one last success in Senna's time with Villarreal this season: after the disappointment of being relegated last year, they bounced straight back into the top-flight as Sunday's 1-0 win over Almeria secured automatic promotion.
