Newell's stay in touch

Newell's Old Boys stayed within touching distance of Torneo Clausura leaders Lanus with a 3-1 win over Tigre on Sunday.

It looked as though the game had turned away from second-placed Newell's just before the hour mark, when Gabriel Heinze was sent off and Ruben Botta scored from the penalty spot to cancel out Victor Figueroa's first-half opener.

But Santiago Vergini restored the hosts' lead and, after Tigre had Diego Castano dismissed, Ignacio Scocco rounded off the win.

The teams in third and fourth, River Plate and Arsenal Sarandi, shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

The goals came in quick succession in the first half, Dario Benedetto putting Arsenal ahead in the 14th minute before Rogelio Mori equalised five minutes later.

Colon Santa Fe left it late to beat Velez Sarsfield 2-1. Velez led through Ezequiel Rescaldani's third-minute penalty but Bruno Urribarri levelled in the second half and Facundo Curuchet scored the last-minute winner.

Estudiantes and Godoy Cruz drew 0-0 in the day's other game.
