German coach Ewald Lienen was fired by AEK Athens today as the financially-troubled giants struggle to stay in the Greek Super League.
The 59-year-old coach was appointed early in the season but lost his job following a 2-0 loss at PAS Giannina yesterday, with a club spokesperson confirming the departure. It is not yet clear who will replace him on the sidelines.
AEK have won just one of their last seven games and lie in 12th place, just one point clear of the relegation zone with only two games remaining. Former Borussia Moenchengladbach player Lienen is well known in Greece having previously coached Panionios and Olympiakos.
