Western Sydney Wanderers moved up to second place in the A-League standings with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle Jets. Taking full advantage of the Melbourne Victory's 1-0 loss away to Adelaide United yesterday, the Wanderers scored late in either half to remain four points off the summit following the Central Coast Mariners' 5-0 thrashing of Wellington Phoenix on Thursday.
It was a fifth straight win for the Wanderers, and came courtesy of goals from Youssouf Hersi and Mark Bridge. Hersi got his third goal in two games on the stroke of half-time, stabbing home Shinji Ono's free-kick, and Bridge doubled the lead with a fine solo effort in the 84th minute, running from almost the halfway line before firing home.
Newcastle captain Ruben Zadkovich got one back in injury time but the points belonged to Western Sydney.
Perth Glory remain rooted to the foot of the table after suffering a fifth straight loss, going down 2-0 to the Melbourne Heart. Nick Kalmar's outstanding free-kick put the hosts ahead after 23 minutes and Eli Babalj snatched a second amid a goalmouth scramble just before the hour mark.
