Bruno Metsu has stepped down as Al Wasl manager after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer earlier this month.

Frenchman Metsu, who led Senegal to the 2002 FIFA World Cup™, has been hospitalised since October 15, where he has been visited by former Al Wasl boss Diego Maradona.

"Due to his current health condition, Mr Bruno Metsu has requested to be relieved from his duties as head coach of Al Wasl," a club statement on their Twitter page read.

"The Al Wasl Board has accepted Mr Metsu's request & thanked him for all he has given, wishing him a speedy recovery & best wishes."
