Dutchman Ricardo Moniz is quitting as coach of Austrian champions Salzburg, the club announced today. Moniz, 47, announced he was parting ways with the seven-time league champions immediately for "professional reasons," the club said on its website.
"Red Bull Salzburg heard this with great regret," it said, noting that the news was "completely unexpected". Moniz, a former midfielder, was promoted to head coach from Salzburg's youth set-up in April 2011 and still had a year to go on his contract.
This season he led the team to the Austrian double, winning both the championship title and the Austrian Cup for the first time. No replacement for Moniz has yet been named.
