Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque said Wednesday he was hopeful that Barcelona captain Carles Puyol would be fit to compete in UEFA EURO 2012.
The 34-year-old defender - an integral part of the Spanish sides that won EURO 2008 and 2010 FIFA World Cup™ titles - underwent surgery on his right knee last Saturday and was expected to be ruled out for six weeks.
"Puyol still has a chance of going to the EURO. It's difficult but we'll know on 27 May if he'll travel or not with us," said Del Bosque.
Despite Barça insisting that Puyol would not be fit to line out with the European and world champions, the speed with which the 99-times capped international started exercising after his operation has led to speculation he could make it.
Barcelona striker David Villa is also in a race for fitness after fracturing his left tibia last December.
